The trend of DIY weddings!

With the rise in popularity of Pinterest, Instagram, and free online wedding boards, it has become much easier for brides...and grooms now to plan for their perfect day. There seems there are two camps associated with the DIY wedding: those who oppose DIY for weddings and those who are embracing the trend.

According to bookmorebrides.com, the author, who herself is a wedding planner and a wedding consultant, embraces the fact that more brides are getting involved with their big day and really adding their own personal flare. She does go to say that the trend has taken away from her business because some will only hire her for the day of the wedding and not the lead up to it.

Another website that actually has some statistics about the DIY brides/grooms was bridebox.com. Here, 200 people were asked if they would plan their own DIY wedding and this is the chart that shows the number:

Just under 80% of the people surveyed said that they would rather do their own planning for the wedding. The article continues on saying that this is putting a strain on the wedding planning industry and that wedding planners need to be ready for a storm.

Personally, I don't think that it will put a strain on the wedding industry, it will help it evolve. Wedding planners and consultants should be shaping their business around what the customer wants. Besides, it's what the customers want that will keep you business. If I was a wedding planner and a bride/groom came to see me with a wedding board or something that she has put together on Pinterest, I would welcome it and try my best to give her/him what she/he wanted. If I was hired only for the day of the wedding, I would still make notes for what I've seen so that I can reflect on my business and how I can evolve.

As we can see DIY is on the rise so what do you think? Do you think that we should fight the trend or do you think that we should embrace it and evolve with it? Leave a comment and tell me what you think!

  1. Julia,
Great post! I love the thought put behind how the trend of DIY weddings can put a strain on the wedding industry. I feel as if the use of DIY weddings will only help/increase the industry. People are hiring wedding planners, decor/rental companies, and wedding consultants more often because of the use of social media. Bride and grooms are wanting to make those Pinterest boards more of a reality! They are soon to realize that it's either the time to make a DIY wedding, or hiring someone to do that more for them to help ease their sanity. The trend will only get larger, but the help of the industry will increase along with this.
Tomorrow I will be discussing the use of Pinterest boards for weddings, I believe these topics will be a great tie into each other. Feel free to check it out, and see how they are very similar and can only help each other!

  2. I definitely think that planners and brides and grooms should be taking advantage of the trend. However, I don't think you should create a "Pinterest Wedding". As a bride, I would rather pin things as ideas and then come up with my own, so that it doesn't result in a Pinterest wedding that is overdone and not personal, and as a wedding planner I would again, use the DIY pins/Pinterest boards as an inspiration board for ideas, not copy it. I'm actually a little bit surprised by that chart, I would have thought that most brides (and grooms) would want to DIY at least something, even if it's a small thing because I think those little touches make it different and personal (as long as it wasn't taken off Pinterest and copied). I think that whether you like it or not you have to embrace every new trend that comes your way, because as a planner it is most likely what a lot of brides and grooms will be looking at and into. You can't really refuse the trend because that's the way people are showing inspiration and coming up with their design and theme. I don't think a planner would survive if they weren't with or even ahead of the trends. It keeps them up to date and I think would create more business as that is what couples will be looking for.

    1. I honestly have never heard the term Pinterest Wedding and I love it! It is very true and I agree. You can build off of the ideas that you see but, as you said, you shouldn't have a complete Pinterest wedding.

  3. Julia,
Great blog post! However I agree with Emily. I feel as if pintrest weddings have become too popular since the uprise of pintrest. I feel as if using pintrest as a guide line for different idea's is a great tool but I like Emily's idea of taking an idea and twisting it to give your wedding its own personal touch. I do think that Brides, grooms and event planners can all benefit from DIY wedding idea's from pintrest and that they defiantly help couples save money for their weddings! I feel as if this trend will only continue to become more and more popular and we will soon be seeing some more cool idea's that couples use/ came up with to DIY their weddings.

    1. I think this trend will become more popular too. As both you and Emily B have stated, you can take the idea but you have to be able to put your own spin on it and make it your own.

  4. I love the idea of DIY. It makes things so personal, and have a lot more meaning. However I must say, I've seen quite a few DIY gone wrong, and things looking not so great. I'd say if you're going to go DIY, make sure you can do it right.

    1. I agree! I too have seen some Pinterest ideas, from wedding to home decor, not turn out the way they should have. As you said, make sure you can do it right.

  5. As the ladies have said, I believe that you have to embrace the trend and go along with it BUT only to a certain point. Take ideas, become inspired etc.- these are what everyone should be doing. DIY is cheaper, but rarely works out 100%. Everything looks neat and easy on Pinterest, especially with the neat little photos and cute comments, but once you get down and dirty, I think people doing realize how LONG and DIFFICULT some of the projects can be! It would take away from the planning industry at the same time adding to it: planners can really be more creative and have more fun in their design while balancing, as you said, what the client wants, but there is a lot of fixing what goes wrong and trying to give brides and grooms a dose of reality...
Wooh! Lots of opinions, but fun read Jules! :)
